How to Brush your Teeth without a toothbrush?

As I just remarked, you certainly can brush your teeth without a toothbrush, and honestly speaking, there are quite a few ways to do it.

The main ways among these might be summed up as follows:

First way: Using an alternative to your toothbrush

You wouldn’t believe how easy it is to find a viable alternative to your toothbrush from the items that you use almost everyday!

The best ideas that you might go for would include but not be limited to:

  • A Wash-Cloth is an amazing idea to go for if you’re looking for something that’s going to be effective.
  • A Paper towel would also be really effective and would be soft enough for you to use comfortably.

However, you need to keep in mind that these would never be as efficient as regular toothbrushes and while you could use them as makeshift choices, they could not permanently replace your toothbrush if you want to retain that beautiful smile.

Second Way: Using a Twig

A much more sustainable choice is to return to what we used to do before we got around to using toothbrushes. In fact, in some parts of the world, some people still use twigs to brush on a daily basis!

This is something that people have used for ages and has turned out to be pretty much a good idea for the long term. So, using a twig would actually be a great idea if you’re looking for an “organic” toothbrush too (I’m sorry for the bad joke.)

The main types of trees that you’d want these twigs to belong to are as follows:

  • Oak
  • Arak
  • Neem

Now, Wikihow has the right guide on how you might be able to select and use the twigs. Quoting Wikihow,

  • Pick a young, flexible branch about 6 to 8 inches long (15 to 20 cm). You want one without real bark, only a thin skin.

  • Peel the skin off and chew on one end of the stick until the fibers separate, turning the end into a little brush. Use it to brush your teeth.

  • You can also use a toothpick to clean between teeth, but use caution so as not to hurt your gums and make them bleed.

Third way: Just use your finger!

If none of the other two ways seem like a good idea to you, this would probably be the best choice then.

If you don’t want to rely on a replacement, you might just want to use your finger! In fact, some people actually do prefer using their fingers for brushing every once in a while.

Using your finger is a good idea for the most part, but you need to keep in mind that it has a few limitations to it as well- especially in terms of its reach. It cannot really reach all the parts of your mouth and so you need to ensure that you actually brush in such a way that you can cover most of your mouth.

Do you need to use a Toothpaste when you’re brushing without toothbrush?

This honestly depends on the exact method that you opt for. While you can actually use toothbrush with all of them, some of them are good choices on their own and you really do not need to use a toothpaste.

For example, if you’re using a paper towel or just using your finger, it would probably be for the best to actually go ahead and use some toothpaste because these things do not really have anything to act as a replacement.

However, when you’re using a twig, you mostly don’t really need to go ahead and use a toothpaste, because older people who didn’t have toothbrushes didn’t really have toothpastes either, and so we already know that it’s fairly good on its own.

There are methods to clean your teeth without brushing too!

Keep in mind that there are quite a few ways to actually clean your teeth without brushing them as well.

In case you don’t have a toothbrush handy or just don’t feel like brushing, you might want to actually take a look at these too before you go ahead and find a make-shift toothbrush.

The main methods that you might want to know about are as follows:

  • Using a Mouthwash.
  • Using dental floss or using a Waterpik- waterpiks are actually fairly efficient and can replace manual flosses almost entirely. (Click here to view my article on this)
  • Chewing gum to clean your teeth.
  • Using the force of shower-water to clean your teeth is also a viable alternative.
