Can You Clean a Toothbrush in the Microwave

clean toothbrush in microwave

Never.

That’s exactly what my answer is every single time someone asks me this question. And trust me, this happens more than often.

If you run a quick search on the internet you’ll find most people actually recommending using a microwave to clean your toothbrush. So, it might come across to you a as a surprise that I’m outright asking you not to do it.

[But guess what, there’s a really good reason behind this, so keep reading to find out more!]

While some people do recommend microwaving it, I don’t even think it’s a valid choice. Hydrogen peroxide is what I personally recommend going for. See this post for more info.

Why it’s not even worth considering the good points.

A lot of people would recommend checking out the pros and cons of every method. However, with a method as flawed as this one, I really don’t see why you should even consider it.

[Honestly, this method isn’t even worth considering as a valid one, and I’ll tell you why in this article.]

The main point about cleaning your toothbrush, in the first place, is to take care of your dental and oral health.

But if you take a step that actually puts your overall health at risk in order to do that, is it really worth even going for at the end of the day?

I don’t think so.

And that is exactly why I’d say that you should not even look at the positive points. This is not a valid method to go with.

What’s so wrong with microwaving your toothbrush?

Microwaving your toothbrush might initially look like a good choice.

However, once you take the time to think about it, the problems become obvious. You cannot just microwave all sorts of plastics, to begin with.

What happens when you microwave your toothbrush is that it actually decomposes and lets out harmful chemicals such as Bisphenol-A (BPA) that the plastics might possibly contain.

These chemicals put your health at serious risk and can lead to deadly problems down the road such as infertility and even various types of cancer. Quoting NewsAm,

…microwaving a plastic toothbrush can put people at risk for exposure to bisphenol-A (BPA), a chemical found in many types of plastic that has been linked to a wide variety of ill health effects, including infertility and various types of cancer.

What should I do then?

Well, the first thing to do is to stop considering microwaving your toothbrush an option.

As we have already seen, it’s probably one of the worse things that you can do!

However, it’s true that you still need to clean your toothbrush, right? Well, the best way to do that, according to me, is to just stick to older methods for now.

You can use a lot of things such as Hydrogen Peroxide, Baking Soda, and even Vinegar!

Personally, however, I recommend going with Hydrogen Peroxide. It seems like one of the best solutions out there.

Is Hanging a toothbrush from the wall or mirror a good idea?

Well, you might wonder at one point or another if hanging your toothbrush is such a great idea after all.

As it turns out, it actually meets all of the requirements of a proper way of storing your toothbrush. This actually makes hanging it a pretty great idea to go for!

However, there are still a few things you need to keep in mind. The most important of these by far is where you plan to hang it.

[Most people I know choose to hang it in their bathroom, here’s why that’s a horrible idea!]

As it turns out, most of the people choose to store it in their bathroom. This is by far one of the worst things out there that you can do!
