Can You Use Listerine in a Waterpik?

Can you use Listerine in a waterpik?

I once used to think that using Listerine in a Waterpik would actually not be a good idea and refrained from doing it.

But I was wrong. And in today’s article, I’m going to tell you why you can use Listerine in a Waterpik.

After I actually did the research, I found out that there’s actually no reason to do it at all! There is basically no reason as to why you should not do that in the first place.

I literally read somewhere that it in fact increases the overall efficiency since you don’t have to do two things one by one and you actually manage to do both of them properly!

[However, naturally, that’s not all there is to it. And we’re going to take a look at the details in today’s article, so stay tuned!]

Are you using your Waterpik often enough? It’s important to floss your teeth frequently enough! See this post for more info.

Can you use Listerine in a waterpik?

As I just remarked, there’s no reason why you cannot use Listerine in a Waterpik.

In fact, while some people prefer using vinegar diluted with water, dental experts actually recommend using diluted mouthwash such as Listerine.

In all honesty I must say that I actually don’t use Listerine in my Waterpik, instead I try to use more natural products that do the same thing.

In my bathroom you’ll find Tom’s as my mouth wash of choice for a number of reasons but I do think it works just as good.

Apparently, the mouthwash has the right properties to actually take care of the germs in your mouth and to do away with any remaining chances for plaque to thrive.

So, if you’re as much in love with your dental hygiene as I am, using diluted Listerine or any other mouthwash in a Waterpik might be a great idea for you!

Quoting MiamiDesignerSmiles,

Water flossers operate simply on water, but what about adding mouthwash or other oral rinses to the machine? Each water flossing device will come with instructions for recommended usage, as determined by the manufacturer, and it is typically recommended to use warm water for flossing. However, adding a small amount of mouthwash helps to not only add flavoring to the water but helps to enhance the effectiveness of your oral hygiene regimen. Chlorhexidine and Listerine have been clinically tested for safe use in a water flosser, according to Waterpik, a leading brand water flosser. It is important to note that any time a solution other than water is used in your water flossing machine, make certain you thoroughly rinse the machine after use. This helps to preserve the inner components and longevity of the device. Also, always be sure to consult the dentist for any special rinsing agents that may benefit you specifically.

So, can you use Listerine in a Waterpik? Well, it just so happens that you perfectly can!

How to use Listerine in a Waterpik?

Well, now you must be wondering about the right method to actually use listerine in a waterpik and the measures you must take to ensure that you get a perfect dental hygiene while keeping your device in top-shape too.

Well, guess what, Waterpik has already taken care to answer this question for you. Quoting Waterpik,

We recommend using warm water. Water alone is proven highly effective in numerous clinical studies. However, patients can use certain agents with the Water Flosser:

Mouthwash – A small amount of mouthwash can be added to the water for flavoring and/or to enhance compliance.

Chlorhexidine and Listerine – Have been clinically tested for use with the Water Flosser. CHX can be diluted in varying strengths.

Any time an agent other than water is used in the Water Flosser, flush the unit by running plain water through it afterwards.

We do not recommend pure essential oils such as tea tree oil; it destroys the product. (Formulated products that are commonly available, such as Listerine, contain essential oils in small amounts and won’t harm the product).

So, to sum it up in a few small points, these are the main things to keep in mind:

  • Ideally, warming up your water a little can provide you with the best results when it comes to diluting the mouthwash/Listerine a bit.
  • Using Listerine is perfectly fine and is even recommended if you want a higher level of efficiency than just water.
  • However, it is important to actually flush the unit by running plain water through it later. This is to ensure that there is no reaction of any remaining solution with the body of the unit and is something that should be positively kept in mind.
  • Finally, it is probably the best idea to not use essential oils with the waterpik. However, Listerine, although it contains essential oils in small amounts, is alright and would be perfectly fine to use.
