Can a waterpik replace flossing?
July 12, 2019
Waterpik was originally intended to be used as a replacement for conventional string flossing.
However, has it lived up to what it aspired to be? Is it worth using and is it good enough for you to actually entirely replace flossing with waterpik?
Well, Quoting CreeksideDental,
Using the Water Flosser and traditional string floss together achieves the best result, however some people do very well with a Water Flosser alone. Some people have trouble using floss. Those with tight teeth or dexterity issues, such as arthritis, may find a Water Flosser beneficial and easier to use than traditional floss. It’s also a wonderful way to clean around braces, implants and bridges. Regular flossing is an important way to clean the vulnerable enamel between teeth, and it goes a long way toward preventing tooth decay.
But it’s honestly something you cannot say with perfect certainty.
It must still be kept in mind that there are some benefits to string flossing that one must still be aware about.
Can a waterpik replace flossing?
One of the main questions you can ask me at this point is if a waterpik can actually replace flossing.
Well, by flossing, we mean the conventional string floss that most of us are familiar with. We put the string between our teeth, and floss it to essentially prevent tooth decay as well as improve our overall dental health.
But, how much of this can you really do with a waterpik?
- Some people claim that the waterpik is actually a great alternative and can be up to three times as effective as regular string flossing! They claim that there’s no reason to hold back and that we should shift entirely to waterpik.
- However, the generic brand name, Waterpik, says on their website that it really isn’t exactly that way. Waterpik’s official website says that flossing cannot simply be replaced by flossing.
- So, what Waterpik recommends instead is for you to actually use both if you can. In fact, we already discussed the right order to do this right here on Tooth Advocates- click here to check it out!
So, at the end of the day, we can safely say that while one might be able to replace it to some extent, it really isn’t recommended to do it.
However, it must still be kept in mind that a lot of people actually used to have a lot of trouble using string flosses properly. I, for one, could never really use it properly and so almost never really used it!
However, with the Waterpik, that has become a lot simpler. It is much easier to use, and everyone can actually use it.
This makes the Waterpik a much better choice. And while it really isn’t recommended to entirely replace flossing with it, that is a potential alternative for people who have a really hard time flossing with string floss.
Why should we not ditch string floss altogether?
Well, you might be wondering why string floss still has any validity, despite the claims that the waterpik actually has a far greater efficiency in cleaning.
While that might be true, there are some good reasons why the string floss still holds quite a bit of importance. The main reasons might be summed up as follows:
- Healthy teeth: One of the main reasons is because string floss is one of the things that actually help you keep your teeth healthier for a longer time. It helps you clean the enamel more properly, letting you maintain a better dental health for a longer time.
- Affordability: Another major reason why a lot of people still use the string floss is because it’s more affordable. Some people are still not ready to make the investment, and they just prefer to stick to string floss.
- Convention: As much as we argue that the Waterpik is better, some people are just so used to the string floss that they don’t really feel like leaving it. They might eventually just shift to using both of them though, which is actually the best thing to do anyway!
Can Water Flossers Damage Gums?
One of the most commonly asked questions is if water flossers such as Waterpik can actually damage gums.
I have a lot of my friends asking me the same question, and the answer is No, it does not.
In fact, flossers are actually much better than string floss to keep your gums healthy and your overall dental hygiene better.
