Is a water flosser more effective than string floss?
July 12, 2019
You might have often come across the claim that water flossing is 93% more effective than regular flossing.
Seems outright outrageous, doesn’t it? Seemed so to me when I first heard it.
But what if I told you it’s actually somewhat correct?
That’s correct. With just a little research it can easily become clear to anyone just why and how water flossing really is a much better method that’s really worth going for.
[You must be wondering why. That’s precisely what we’re going to take a look at during the course of today’s article, so be sure to keep reading!]
What is String Floss?
Well, good old string floss or dental floss is something almost all of us are used to.
It’s been around for ages, and almost everyone has used it at least once.
But in case you haven’t, it’s pretty much the same as a string, just for you to put in between your teeth to keep then clean and thus keep your dental health and hygiene just as perfect as you want it to be.
And since it’s been around, a lot of popular brands are actually present when it comes to String Floss. As such, you can choose among Oral B, Listerine, Johnson and Johnson and even more awesome brands!
[Also, you can also find flavored String flosses! That’s something that really makes me love them!]
What is Water Floss?
Water Flossing, on the other hand, is actually not that old. On the contrary, it’s fairly recent.
Gerald Moyer, a dental professional, and Engineer John Mattingly invented the first water flosser in 1962. This eventually led to the company of Waterpik, which is the first name that comes to mind when it comes to water flossers even today!
Water flossers aren’t anything too complicated. It just throws a thin but strong stream of water that you can properly angle so that it can do the same thing as regular floss.
However, a lot of dental professionals consider it to be better than regular floss on multiple accounts.
[What are these accounts, you must wonder. Well, we’re going to get straight on to those in a minute, so hold on!]
Water flossers aren’t super rare, though. Waterpik, as I said, is one of the most famous names when it comes to this. However, there are also other prominent names such as Panasonic and DLIUZZ.
How are water flossing and string flossing different?
Well, the differences between these two are many, as one can easily see.
However, what are these differences exactly? And how does that make one of them better at their job over the another?
And which model exactly does it make better? Which one should you go for?
[Well, we’re finally going to answer the question you’ve been asking! So, be sure to pay attention!]
The main differences between these two models can easily help us find the answers to all these questions. As such, we might now just as well move on to taking a look at them:
- Reach-ability: When it comes to ease of use, people are generally divided in their opinion. While some people find the water flosser to be much easier because of how flexible it is and how you don’t have to worry about fitting something between your teeth, some people just don’t think it works properly because it doesn’t reach the part of your teeth you want it to. So, all we can say is that, ideally, if it can reach all the spots in your mouth properly, the water flosser might be the better choice.
- Overall cleanliness: Most people believe that the water flosser is the more cleanly option of the two. This mostly consists of the fact that you’re not having to put something else inside your mouth. Regardless of how clean it is, using water directly is bound to be cleaner. This is something that water flosser lovers often like to point out, and is something actually worth considering.
- Ease of use: The ease of use, once again is sort of mixed. While you’re actually using the product, the water flosser might be easier to use. However, keep in mind that you’d have to actually recharge it after you’re done. This is something that you don’t have to do with the string floss, giving the latter an upper edge in that case.
- Price: And of course, what any and every smart consumer must consider, the price. Well, as you might have guessed, the water flosser actually costs a bit more. However, quality string floss also costs quite a bit. As such, it’s mostly about 2-3 times as expensive as most of the upper-range string flosses out there. But since you need to keep buying string flosses, it might be a comparatively better economic choice to consider investing in the water flosser.
Is a water flosser more effective than string floss?
Well, if you consider all the differences, it sort of does seem like that.
Let’s be honest, the regular string floss is really awesome too, and I personally prefer sticking to it anyway, as do a lot of people.
But, based purely on the advantages that we see, the water flosser seems to be a slightly better choice when it comes to choosing one between the two.
