Cleaning your toothbrush with vinegar sounds really absurd. And trust me. It. Zoned. Me. Out. Too!
But guess what? I did some research, and turns it out actually does work! So, I’m here to show you what I found out, so that you can keep in mind that there’s this way out there as well that you might go for!
Does Vinegar Kill Bacteria on a Toothbrush?
Given the fact that bacteria are mostly the root of all evil when it comes to teeth, that’s the first question you should ask.
Well, as it turns out, vinegar has good news for you! It can actually get rid of the bacteria.
So, that makes Vinegar a great choice because you can rest assured that the main thing that causes problems isn’t going to even be able to get close to your teeth anymore, keeping your overall dental hygiene top shape!
Please do keep in mind that some people do have other opinions about it at the same time. Quoting MNN,
However, vinegar is not a registered disinfectant and does not kill dangerous bacteria like staphylococcus.
[But of course, that isn’t all that there is to it. Read on to find out more about it!]
Does Vinegar Kill Mold On Toothbrush?
Okay, now here comes one of the harder parts to answer.
Vinegar is actually a mild acid. This means, that it’s generally a good thing to deal with most kinds of mold.
But some kinds aren’t really affected that much by mild acids. So, these molds can actually withstand vinegar, making getting rid of them a job that’s not really possible for your kitchen-friend.
Quoting TheMaids,
Vinegar is a mild acid which can kill 82% of mold species. (Baking soda is often used along with vinegar for killing different species of mold).
To kill mold: Use white distilled vinegar and pour it into a spray bottle without watering it down. Spray the vinegar onto the moldy surface and leave it to sit for an hour
So, I guess it suffices to say that while vinegar gets rid of most of the mold, some might still remain. This seems like one of the things you might want to keep in mind.
Does Vinegar kill Viruses on a Toothbrush?
Next in line is the question if Vinegar can kill viruses properly.
Well, that’s one thing that vinegar can do without you having to be too worried.

This has actually led to a lot of people commending that vinegar is actually a safer alternative to bleach here. Even if you aren’t able to remove all the vinegar, it might taste a little sour, but you won’t be putting yourself at risk.

Vinegar has been treated as a great choice for yeast treatment for quite a while now. And since it’s really safe, a lot of people have decided to only go for this method.
Add to that the fact that it’s amazingly effective, and you know why people didn’t really have to change to something else.
Anyway, in case you want to go for something else. that’s possible too. You can shift to baking soda, the age-tested method when it comes to dealing with Yeast! (Click here to read our article on using Baking Soda)
Does Vinegar Kill Fungus on a toothbrush?
As I just remarked, Vinegar is a strong anti-fungal agent. As such, it’s quite safe to assume that it’s easily able to deal with fungus on a toothbrush.
However, just like I said about yeast, Baking Soda might be a great choice here as well. So, be sure to check that out and compare the two before actually going for one of them!
Keep in mind that what you select isn’t important- what’s important is your dental hygiene and health, and you must pay complete attention to that.
How to Disinfect your toothbrush with Vinegar?
Okay, now, you might be convinced that using Vinegar is worth it.
[In case you are, you still need to know how to use it properly. Using it the right way is what would guarantee the effects, and not just using it. So, I’d be guiding you through that as well!]

This is how you can disinfect your toothbrush with Vinegar:
- First of all, what you want to do is get some water. Pour 1/2 cup or 120 ml of water into a glass to begin with.
- Next, you need to actually get some vinegar in there. After all, that’s what it’s all about! I’d recommend going with 30 ml/ 2 tablespoons of white vinegar. It’s important to mention here that a lot of people recommend mixing in a bit of Baking Soda at this point too, which is a good choice if you can go with it.
- Anyway, the third step consists of mixing it all up properly and immersing your toothbrush into this solution.
- Finally, what you want to do is leave your toothbrush in there for the next half and hour or so. This would ensure that your toothbrush is properly disinfected to a great extent.
How long does it take for Vinegar to sanitize a toothbrush?
Aha, a good question that you might want to ask me at this point is how long you might want to leave your toothbrush in the solution.
Well, while there’s no perfectly fixed time for it, experts recommend leaving it in there for about 30 minutes.
Within that time, Vinegar takes care of all the things in there that might have tried to cause problems later on. So, it’s recommended that you keep it in there for around 30 minutes if you can.
How often should you soak your toothbrush in Vinegar?
Another good question is how often one should soak their toothbrush in Vinegar.
Well, cutting to the chase, it’s usually recommend that you do it at least once every two weeks. However, doing it once every week is by far the best choice most of the times.
So, if you ask me, I’d say that you should do it once a week if that isn’t much of a problem for you.
