Can You Use Baking Soda in a Waterpik?
July 12, 2019
One of the first things I wondered when I learned about the waterpik was if it was safe to use baking soda in it or not.
Well, so I did my research and I found out that people are actually pretty confused about it! If you run a google search, you’ll find out different sources saying different things.
However, if we actually think for ourselves and look at what Waterpik has to say, it is safe to say that the best idea is to not use baking soda in a waterpik.
[Wondering about how we reached that conclusion? Stick around to find out why we’re saying this!]
Can you use baking soda in a Waterpik?
“Can you use baking soda in a waterpik?”
I know you’ve had that question for a long time and that nothing really seems to be wrong with it at first.
However, once you think over it a little more technically, you will realize that it’s probably the best idea not to do it.
Just like with the water lines in a coffee maker baking soda can leave residue that builds up and can affect performance of the device. Although it can clean and disinfect your unit and your mouth you probably don’t want to do it this way unless you are ready to buy a new Waterpik.
If you think your water lines are clogged already then maybe a replacement wand is all you need though. They are pretty cheap on Amazon as you can see here.
If you want to clean the lines out then running a vinegar/water mixture through it periodically works well as does running diluted Listerine through it. The side benefit is that the Listerine will help disinfect the Waterpik while also disinfecting your teeth and gums when you use it.
Here’s another reason why we don’t recommend using baking soda, because Waterpik the company really doesn’t recommend using Baking Soda in it eight.
Quoting Wikihow,
Never use bleach, iodine, baking soda, salt, or concentrated essential oils in your Waterpik. These methods can affect how your product performs and how long it lasts.
Check your product manual or contact Waterpik if you want to use a solution other than diluted vinegar or mild mouthwash, to make sure it is compatible with your product.
However, as we said earlier, there are some other sites that do believe that using Baking soda would not be much of a problem, and they are worth a mention too, so that you can actually judge from yourself.
So, quoting DrBunn,
…with baking soda added to the water – kills bacteria between teeth.
Add two teaspoons of plain baking soda to a full reservoir of water (this gives you a saturated solution which is the required concentration to kill bacteria). You can put mouthwash in for flavor (a capful), but it is not antibacterial unless used undiluted. Most people prefer warm water.
So, at the end of the day, there’s a pretty widespread confusion about what should be done in case of Baking Soda.
However, because we want your device to be durable, it is generally recommended that you look for an alternative until you’re perfectly sure that it’s okay to use Baking Soda.
If I still want to use Baking Soda, how to do it?
Well, it might so happen that you still want to use Baking Soda.
Well, that’s perfectly fine and we’ll tell you how to do it in that case as well. As it so happens, it’s actually really simple to use because you just have to reach a specific level of concentration.
So, you might want to follow these steps to properly use Baking Soda in your waterpik if you want to:
- First of all, you want to actually get hold of your waterpik and some Baking Soda. Begin by filling up your waterpik with water, preferably warm water.
- Next, you need to put in about two tablespoons of baking soda in there to make it reach the required amount of concentration to actually kill the bacteria in there.
- However, as you know, the taste of baking soda isn’t exactly great. So, you might also want to use a little bit of mouthwash to ensure that you don’t have a horrible aftertaste later.

Should brushing ideally follow flossing?
One of the most commonly asked questions is how once should arrange
brushing and flossing, and which one should follow the other.
I did my research on this, and I figured out that brushing should be done first. After that, you should floss your teeth.
This gives you quite a few advantages over doing it the other way around. To begin with, brushing helps you get rid of the food debris in your mouth and the larger pieces stuck between your teeth so that the Waterpik can take care of the minute particles that finally remain.
However, guess what? Tooth Advocates already has an entire article on this that I would really recommend for you to check out!

How many times should you floss everyday?
Once you’ve figured out the answer to is it better to floss in the
morning or night, this is the next question that’s bound to come to your
mind.
[And of course, we’re going to answer it for you, so there’s no need for you to worry, just keep reading to find out!]
Well, it just so happens that American Dental Association recommends
doing it at least once everyday. However, a lot of professionals
actually recommend using it twice if you can.
Here at Tooth Advocates, we think that the frequency of doing it is just as important in order to keep your dental health perfect. So, we’ve already prepared an article discussing how many times you should ideally use your waterpik everyday.
